Steve was a truly brilliant scientist, inspirational leader & above all a wonderful person. From tales of his US Midwest roots, to driving forward our understanding of soils locally (he truly loved Yorkshire in all its beauty & food production) and globally, to supporting and empowering others across continents, his love of the land and all it supports was clear to all. I will always remember our chats guiding the work at the University of Leeds Farm, in establishing the Global Food & Environment Institute and in making a huge success of partnerships in both China and Africa. We will continue to strive for the sustainable food futures to which his work so richly enabled. As Aldo Leopold so wisely guided - "we shall never achieve harmony with the land, any more than we shall achieve absolute justice or liberty for people. In these higher aspirations, the important thing is not to achieve but to strive."
