Our community has lost an excellent colleague and scientist, an integrator, a team player a native of Ames, Iowa. I had the honor to host Steve here at the National Lab for Agriculture and the Environment here at his home turf. I am saddened with his loss and my deep condolences to his family. Steve has been so generous to me and many others and I will miss him. You are forever with us my good friend.

I was really shocked and saddened to hear of Steve’s passing. Steve was a good man, with a talent for seeing the bigger picture and for bringing people together. We spent a lot of time together over the years, working on building up food security research and particularly through N8 agri-food. Being in a meeting with Steve was always fun and the last time I saw him was late 2023 for a surreptitious pint an catch up with colleagues, characteristically jolly with plenty of amusing anecdotes and warmth, I still am in shock that will be the last time. Really gonna miss you buddy x

I met Barney when I started my Ph.D. at EAWAG in Hochnebelville, Switzerland (aka Dübendorf - a true Barney quote that stuck with me). Upon my arrival, it was Barney who showed me around EAWAG and Prof. Stumm’s group. I had just returned from a nearly 3-year stay in Oregon, USA, and was suffering tremendously from what could be considered a serious counter-culture shock, but after spending a few hours with Barney, the world already looked brighter again. After some time, Barney moved on and while I heard rumours regarding his whereabouts from time to time, I somehow lost direct connection. He was one of those people that I wanted to reconnect with, but never managed to – so, all of you out there thinking of reconnecting someday: do not wait too long, do it while things are fine – I think Barney would like that.
